[CLOSED!] - Complain and Win a Prize!

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 29, 2012, 2:10 PM
EDIT:  Come back tomorrow for the results! Phase Two begins on the 2nd!

That's right, crazy old thorny coconut is giving out prizes for complaining, and quite a few of you know this trick already. Yes, the Complaint Challenge has returned and this time GrimFace242 is going to help me run it! :happybounce: And we cannot wait to see all the gripes and Phase 2 entries after last year's awesome submissions!

What could be more fun than winning points by complaining? Well, what happens after the complaining will be more fun, in my thorny opinion, but I'll save that until this portion is complete. Psst, next phase will have loads more prizes. :eyes:

The Complaint Challenge! - Phase 1

It's the end of the year and a perfect time to unload your gripes. Put them out in the open and prepare for a new year that will be filled with plenty more complaint worthy stuff.

I don't want just any complaints though. I want your dA complaints! Tell me what bugs you about deviantart the site or the deviantart community. I'm serious business about my prizes too and expect you to put some thought and effort into this.

We don't need super crazy rants (please don't!), and it can be issues that have been brought up before. Anything dA related is fair game including features and the community itself. Maybe you're frustrated with premium content, remembering where the period is in stash, or maybe you just hate the deviant green color scheme. Share your thoughts!

Requirements

:bulletblue: Comment on this journal with your complaint(s).

:bulletblue: Complaints must be about deviantART (site, community, etc)!

:bulletblue: Use 2-6* sentences per complaint to describe your gripe.

:bulletblue: Be courteous.

:bulletblue: Limit it to two* complaints.

:bulletblue: Deadline: December 31st at 11:59 PM EST (USA)

:bulletred: Fine Print :bulletred:
You will express your opinion and complaints with maturity and grace. You will NOT single out individuals, call people names, or otherwise make a fool of yourself in my journal. Any inflammatory comments will be hidden without response and you will be disqualified from this contest and any other contest I run. Ever.

*I'm not going to disqualify you if it's not exact, but please do not leave me a page long rant.

Prizes

These will be distributed at random. Anyone who meets the requirements will be entered into a drawing for prizes.
:bulletgreen: 200 dA points
:bulletgreen: 100 dA points
:bulletgreen: 50 dA points x 4

Phase 2 - Coming January 2nd!

On January 1st, 2013 I will post the winners and everyone's complaints. Then the not so super secret next phase of The Complaint Challenge will begin!

I hope you're all having happy holidays so far!

I think one of my biggest and moat noticeable qualms is how ignored or pushed under the rug both the community and the site treat the artforms outside of visual art. Though this is a site that promotes creativity, it often gets ignored by the more 'refined' visual art. And while the argument could and had been made that deviantart is for visual, are we only to say those are the expressions if art? And its not only the site staff, but the community that does nothing but allow such a thing to thrive.

On an extended note, I have always disdained how easy it is to ignore people because their expressions of are still need work. And to make matters worse, its almost customary to give a thumbs up or down without a critique. I am no saint in this area, since I have done this myself, but it only serves as a reminder of the disjointed unity that is the community. Which is the lifeblood of the site and what makes and cultivates the great art creators of tomorrow.

Just my two cents.

My biggest problem is something that is shared with a lot of users: The new submit screen! I find it very counter-intuitive, simply because the old dA submit screen was so simple and easy to follow. The new one makes it easier to find a few features, but I had to submit something quite a few times only to find it disappeared! Later, I found them all in my sta.sh.

Another thing that bothers me is that since group messages are seen by all admins, sometimes we end up replying twice. "Gee awesome group" and then a storm of "Thanks!" It gets a little out of hand.

condom ads are also uncool but I don't think that's dA's fault

What I just noticed recently is the fact that the "is online" feature by deviantART ist not reliable :grump: At least not really ...
It's completely alright to show people as idle after a while and after fifteen minutes as offline, that's normal - but not if you log out! I have checked it a few times and after logging out, you are still shown as online, then idle and after fifteen minutes offline! That's not really what I want because I can totally understand the first one but not the second one because I wish to be shown as offline when I sign out to not mislead my friends who use the Friends widget to see whether someone is online or not.

Anyway, enough complaining, it's a nice day so ... happy new year everyone :D

1. Gifs that are "too large" to be an icon, the 15kb limit needs to be increased to allow longer animations as icons.

2. Less repeat groups do we really need bazillion of groups that all do that same things or dead groups should at least be deleted to clean up the large numbers of groups on here.

My biggest problem with deviantART is the comment spam system. When I'm posting features or thanking people for favorites I constantly have to pause because deviantART thinks my numerous comments could be spam. Other websites and systems use Captcha in order to overcome this and I'd be a lot happier if I could just enter the silly captcha code every once in a while rather than having to wait hours just to thank someone or to tell them that they've been featured. This drives me crazy!

.__. Homigod, that funky thing Sta.sh Writer is doing, where it inserts random line breaks every twelve words or so, and you end up with goofy squished paragraphs if you don't feel like going through and backspace-spacebar-ing every new line in the entire piece...
I reported it a few hours ago, and I hope it gets fixed soon, because I was JUST starting to like Sta.sh when it started being all mean to me... ;;

Oh, and the enormous numbers of HetaliaThingxReader fics that people refuse to submit under Fanfiction. It is really hard to find good original work in the Literature > Prose gallery.

Three things:

1: PLEASE find some way to patrol self confessed troll groups. The business with the Butt Hurt Brigade got to a ridiculous point before it was dealt with, and to be frank, it really made a lot of peoples' dA experience very unpleasant.

2: The new way that Sta.sh has you switch files for deviations when you edit your art is very hard to figure out for some people. If there could be some sort of walkthrough (I have yet to find one that adequately explains it for one of my friends and she's having big issues with it) I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it

3: I agree with ~WolfPawCreator the restriction on one account per e-mail is a little frustrating. After all, some people have accounts designated to one type of art (or they have one as their normal art, and one for, say RPing). Or if they want to start fresh, they'd need to make a new e-mail for that, which a lot of people do. Besides, it would link accounts, say, if one got banned and they had a secondary account, they wouldn't be able to use it to get around being banned.

Sorry if that was a little long ^^; but I thought it needed to be said, as someone who's been bullied by the trolls on here (they hacked a group I run, deleted all the artwork and put up obscene pictures instead, and kicked everyone out. It took a very long time to put back together, and even then, I received harassing notes from them so much, I swapped accounts at the first excuse)

When someone posts the same post again when they could have seen it two spots below or researched about it elsewhere before posting it again.

I find it annoying how the only way I can see the deviants I watch is to go to my 'send-a-note' page. I mean, I can see everyone who watches me, it would be so much easier if I could see who I watch as well.~

Also, I wish the search results would be more exact, not all mish-mashed. :grump:

Happy New Year!~

1- I really wish that I could own more than one account on an email. Now, DeviantART doesn't let you! They used to, until a few months ago it all stopped. I hate that, if I want to create another account, I have to use a different email that I normally don't use. UGH!

2- I also wish that people without premiums were allowed one custom box. Just one! I could really use it for to-do lists, features of awesome deviants, and more! I could also show needed information for people viewing my page.

I hate not being able to search my favourites! I'd like to see the 'most popular' deviation in my favourites and I'd like to see when they were made while looking at all of them, as well as being able to search for a particular one.

Maybe this will sound a bit rude, but it bugs me when people put up deviations as prints when the deviation just isn't all that spectacular. What I mean by this is some random picture or an amateur drawing. I'm not downplaying anyone's talent - I am the worst drawer in the world and those drawings are ten times better than what I could produce - but nobody's going to buy it. Aren't prints for your very best work? Why would I want to buy a picture of average quality (i.e. angle, focus, lighting, etc.) taken with a cheap digital camera and put it on my wall? I know this isn't worth complaining about, because if it's really not that great then no one will buy it, BUT IT BUGS ME!! =P

Alright, rant over.

1. If you send a lot of Notes, the inbox can get cluttered quickly and it can be a major pain to find that one Note you were looking for. ^^; I wish there was a 'search' function for the names of deviants to sort them like that, or perhaps a way to search for any desired keywords. That would make finding a certain Note so much easier.

2. To me suggesting a DD is frustrating because every category/ volunteer has their own guidelines, and since I forget them quite easily I keep having to re-read them. It feels a bit messy. I know this sounds like a far-fetched idea, but perhaps there could become an entirely different function on the site which allows for users to fill in a form specific to a category they choose. Maybe that would help with getting more literature suggestions as well. Or maybe I'm just a terribly lazy person. :iconidkplz:

1. I still don't like the grey-green background. Not that it's gonna change ^^; It's not a big deal, I just think it washes out some of the graphite/sketch artwork.

2. I wish people would stop complaining that their art gets no attention when they themselves aren't active in the community. Give critiques, join contests, volunteer to admin a group! Create a group! Suggest DD's! Start an engaging, interesting thread in the forums (you know, not "will you please look at my work," but "Dadaism: art or not art?" or even "Which webcomic should I read next?")

Pretty soon, people will see you around, think you're interesting, and start clicking on your gallery and seeing your stuff. It's an easy problem to solve.

1) I hate it that I can never get a lot of people to enter my contests and stuff. I end up getting 1 or 2, but never more than that. It's like people hate me. I mean, I have :points: I'm willing to give, but no one seems to want them,

2) I hate it that I can't share my opinion through art. Like I commission Jack SkellingtonXRachel Terrera, and people shoot it down. Trolls!

That's all! I could do more, but I think it would be much!

My biggest complaint deviantart from the moment I joined the site was the lack of guidance given to newcomers. Not in art itself, but with site navigation. Of course, I did join quite a while ago, so I don't know if things have changed. However, I was completely lost when I first joined this site. I had no idea where everything was. I had no idea how to do anything on this site. I guess it is a thing you learn over time no matter what, but it seemed to take a much longer time for deviantart. I still don't fully understand plz accounts etc. =P I think it'd be nice if the site itself gave some more guidance for site navigation.

Stash drives me nuts. It's supposed to be easier than basic htmling of the old lit submit, but it just irritates me. It's hard to find stuff, hard to use a preview image and hard to get the right formatting etc. that I can get in a flash with html. But I don't like the old lit submit system either, it's fiddly and I have to spend ages converting my rtfs into something with html codes. It got so frustrating I just started posting pdfs for my lit deviations... and now it's changed again. I just want a lit submit system that works... not continual "upgrades" that just take more time out of my day to re-learn how to use just post stuff up.

Hrm.. sorry there's a bit of waffling in there... I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd love a system for submitting lit deviants that just works without the need for lots of work to convert my rtf docs into them, and one that doesn't need work-arounds and fiddly strategies just to make it do what I want it to.

I seem to remember the only way to do it is to post the deviation and then go back into it through edit and you can do it then. It's fiddly.

1. The hackers on DA. I hate the hackers here because one hacker hacked one of my friend's account. I just hate that people are just too lazy to make a account but instead they take someone else's account. I also hate that when they hack an account they make a journal saying " I hacked this account XD". It ticks me off so much :iconangryplz:. I just wish hackers never excited.

2.The new submit art page. I now have to keep my computer open find the picture I want to submit and drag it into the submit art box. Sometimes my computer closes on it's own and just go "AHHHHHHHHHH" because it's just so frustrating. I liked the old submit art page better because just two clicks and BAM pic already in the box. This new submit box is very annoying!!

1.- I despise how DeviantArt focus on Prints when it would be more profitable for them and us to focus on User Experience details. Such as developing a way to upload various pages of narrative illustrations (or comics) at once. I mean, it is really hard for those who like to show their graphin narrations skills to submit it in one each deviation. It creates a whole Mess!!. I humbly ask the DA dudes to think about this :)
