(Updated)DD suggestion guidelines!Hello all
Firstly, I would like to say I am truly grateful for every DD suggestion I receive. It makes me feel reassured that the pieces featured are community decisions, not just my own subjective thoughts and findings. There are millions of writings out there and I can’t see every single one. I rely on good spots of others in hope of continuing to share a variety of good quality and unique literature. Thank you to those who suggest and those who continue to make the time to share their findings.

What I look for in Daily Deviations

For those who know me as a writer, you will know I write

There is no 'Lit Community'There's just you.
You, a person who happens to have words in your head and, sometimes, they spill out into a notebook or a Word document and then eventually end up on the Internet. Hell, there's a lot of you. English doesn't differentiate between the singular and the plural, which means that this paragraph is both about individuals and about a lot of people.
Every so often I see people complain that the "lit community" is elitist, that everyone's an insular jerk, the crits are unfairly harsh, so on and so forth.
And I'm like, WTF is this.
Are you talking about the group with over 7000 members where the admins work their butts off to feature stellar members and provide prompts and encouragement every week even though almost no one responds and just thinks of them as one of the 200+ groups they submit their latest piece to?

So you've written something freaking awesome. You've edited a million times (and if you haven't, turn around and go do that. Right now). You think you maybe want to take the leap and try publishing something. But you have no idea where to start.
Well, this is a good place to be.
This the journal where I'll be keeping a running list of all the publishing resources I find, both on and off dA. Most of it will probably be related to literary journals, since that's the stage where I'm at in my literary career, but I'll add things about book publishing as I find them.

Why should I suggest a DD?
Because people do awesome things and by golly dadgum whillikers, they deserve sitewide appreciation and recognition. Maybe it's because they had the courage to write an intensely personal nonfiction piece, or the nerve to lampoon all the presidents forever, or because they wrote something that made you go 'wow, I wish I could write like that.' The Literature Community ExperimentThis is a typical example of a ^Beccalicious shower pondering! The idea of this is to try and bring together as many people as possible all in one journal, but not for the sake of making a big number, but to encourage interaction and share useful tidbits. We often say the "literature community" has drifted apart over the past few years and this is just one attempt to try get people to come back together. It's a little hippy, perhaps a far-fetched idea, which is why I am calling it an "experiment". This could be successful and could be a complete fail- only you guys and your efforts can decide its fate!

So you may be new to the literature side of deviantART, or you may be one of those long

You might deserve an Olympic gold medal.
But you're never, ever going to deserve a Daily Deviation.

Dudes, a DD is a feature, not an award. There's no objective standard that goes 'here you deserve a big prize now.' Hell, it's not even about the artist being a talented young newbie or a curmudgeonly old fart.
It's about the art.
It's about bringing underexposed art to the forefront for a whole day—yeah, as far as features go this one is probably a bigger deal than being in a journal only twenty people click on, but at the end of the day it's still a feature. Nothing wrong with getting excited over it (or peeing yourself or wondering whom you managed to piss off), but it's not exactly resume material.

Why should I suggest literature to you?
Oh for any number of reasons, the most logical of them being that I (and all of us Lit ^CV's) cannot be everywhere on the site at any given time. There is literature going gravely unnoticed right now that deserves attention and you may be the only one aware of that writer and their work. You should suggest literature because it helps represent the literature community as a whole. It helps us understand what is impacting writers and what is capturing readers' interest when we receive suggestions-- of similar topics, genres, or forms. It helps keep our view of the community in perspective so we are able to make reasonable decisions regarding DD choices.
That Being Said...
I've been a Literature ^CV for a little while now and I'd like to clear up a few things surrounding lit DD suggestions as well as revisit my guidelines below. Starting January 1st, 2013, any suggestion

Breaking in to Lit!Introduction
Literature has long been considered one of the closest knit communities on deviantART. As a result, some people find it difficult to "break in" to the Lit crowd. There are rumors of elitism, difficulty in getting exposure, and lack-luster appreciation for the incredible work that goes into writing a good piece of prose or a well structured poem.
If you look at a painting you can see amazing detail, great use of color, and the importance of the subject immediately. You know it came from the artist's imagination and that he or she had to spend hours translating that to a canvas. The tangibility of the work is right in front of you. With writing, it is not quite the same. The effort the author puts into the work can only be appreciated if readers put in their own effort to read the work. The gratification is not instant, which is one reason the lit community is so close knit.

DDs Aren't PerfectLooking at a positive trend in lit DDs.

Probably the biggest demand authors on this site have is for more constructive feedback. And guess what? One of the ways you do end up getting some great advice is when you get a sitewide feature.
Here are a few quotes from great critiques seen in October's DDs, and yes I have chosen sentences that are offering constructive feedback rather than positivity, so don't assume these critics were pointlessly harsh. I've left them anonymous just in case, but if you recognize your words here, please understand they're appreciated!
I'd suggest incorporating more turns of phrase to keep the language fresh.
I feel as though the action around the beginning of the fire could be a little more clear, and perhaps the setting, too.
I think with a little more condensation, you could make a greater impact upon the reader.
I think shorter would work better, because then you're not adding more 'filler', and shorter sentences work to increase intensity.

Why Suggest?

Part of being a Community Volunteer is featuring wonderful deviations as Daily Deviations, but the keyword is community. I need you guys, the community, to tell me what you like to read. Share your favorite stories and scribbles with the rest of the community by suggesting it for a feature. If you adored it, share it with us!

Instructions

Send your suggestion link/thumbnail to me in a note with the subject "DD Suggestion" please! I encourage you to send multiple suggestions, but be sure to only send one per note. That way I won't get confused and can organize them.

It would be marvelous if you could tell me why you think the deviation should be featured. I want to feel your enthusiasm to I can get excited about the piece too!

Please note, I will thank you for the suggestion, but won't tell you if it will be featured beforehand. It's more fun when it's a surprise!

What I'm looking for in a suggestion:

I will read any type of literature gallery suggestion you send me, and do my best to give it a fair consideration.

I'm stronger in prose and screenplays, but I'm handicapped in poetry. (I'll still look and poke other volunteers for opinions on poetry.) If you prefer to send your poetry suggestions to another Lit Community Volunteer I won't be offended.

Every reader has their favorites, so here's some of mine:

Interesting characters and believable dialog really do it for me. The characters don't all have to be quirky or overdone, but I like depth. It's great when the reader feels a connection with the character and enjoys them, even if they're the 'bad guy' in a story. Also, if it's a little strange and pushes the taboo envelope, I'm usually interested in reading it.

I write romance, so of course I love reading that. Please send some my way!

Check the quality of the deviation. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation should be passable.

You can suggest your own work!

A Few Rules

A deviant can only receive a DD feature once every 6 months. If the deviant had one within the last 6 months I can't feature it. Not sure how to figure that out? Check out this FAQ:
